Let’s Drink to the CDC

by Amy Porter on January 12, 2012

Here’s a news flash from the CDC

More than 38 million US adults binge drink, about 4 times a month, and the largest number of drinks per binge is on average 8. This behavior greatly increases the chances of getting hurt or hurting others due to car crashes, violence, and suicide.

(“Binge Drinking, Nationwide Problem, Local Solutions” CDC Vital Signs – Please take the time to read.)

Personally, I don’t think this information is new.  What is worrisome is that we live in a region that has seen an upswing in domestic violence, suicide and murder in the last 6 months as we deal with our rampant PTSD problems.

 Let’s Get Political

With an under-funded Dept of Health and a mental health system taxed to the max, these stats need to be looked at by someone in El Paso County.  According to the data, 16.8 – 18.6% of the adult population binge drinks in Colorado.  So if you aren’t out partying every weekend and I’m not, then who are the almost 20% of our population that is.  (And, this doesn’t count our teens.)  These folks are averaging 6-7 glasses a night, according to the CDC.

I’ll be curious to see what the El Paso County 2011 DUI stats will show; and unfortunately how this will affect next year’s Quality of Life Indicator stats on health.  Maybe the City Council and County Commissioners will have to take a look at this data.
